Aussie, Aussie, Aussie!

Ok, I admit it – I’ve jumped headfirst onto the bandwagon. I’m now officially a massive Socceroos fan.

And like all good hypocrites, I can justify my situation and differentiate it from all those people I openly abused for suddenly becoming huge fans of teams or people that play sports they don’t understand.

Here goes:

  • Australia making the second round finals in the Soccer World Cup is a much, much bigger achievement than say, the Brisbane Lions winning a few premierships, or Nat and Kerri winning gold at the Olympics. This is a sport that is played in every freaking country in the world.
I mean, Australia has never even looked like they should be there. We’ve only made it to the finals once before and we didn’t score a single point. Suddenly, we’re in the top 16 and looking pretty good!
  • I’ve never said I didn’t like soccer… hell, I even played it when I was a bit younger. And all my complaints about the sport (mainly to do with the acting component) still stand, so it’s not as if I’ve reversed any decision…
  • … I’m sure there’s more reasons I’m right this time and I was still right when I was on my high-horse…

So fine, I’m a hypocrite. I can live with that. Please address abuse to the comments section of this post…

iPod killer?

I just read an article from CNet about a portable device that Microsoft is apparently working on. According to the article, it may focus on music rather than gaming.

As is common in articles about portable music devices, the article pondered whether this forthcoming device could be the “iPod killer” we’ve all been waiting for.

You want to know what I think? Probably not, but I assume you’ll keep reading anyway…

There is no such thing as an iPod killer.

The whole suggestion that we’re just waiting for the right device to come along before everyone will suddenly drop their iPods in the bin and replace them with this fantastic new music player is ludicrous.

Why?

Well iPod’s share of the portable music player market has grown steadily since its release. According to the NDP Group (quoted here), the iPod range accounts for about 80% of the MP3 player market. So 80% of people who have an MP3 player* have an iPod or some variant. The point is, why would they change? Even if they did decide they needed a new player, they’re used to the iPod, they know it works, and they’ve probably bought a whole lot of music on iTunes that they can’t play on another device anyway. The natural choice is to get a better iPod.

Let’s face it, there are probably a lot of devices out there that are better than the iPod in terms of price, functionality, the number of file formats they can recognise, etc. The market share of these devices may have grown, but clearly they haven’t killed the iPod. Not even close.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not suggesting that iPod’s share of the MP3 player market will continue to increase or even stay at the level it is. Depending on what Apple‘s strategy is, who knows what it will do?

There has been speculation that Apple will start releasing iPod mobile phones at some stage, and that makes a lot of sense. As companies like Motorola, Nokia and Sony Ericsson continue to release phones that can do all that an iPod can do and more, I can’t imagine people will feel the need to upgrade to a new standalone music player. I do think that it’s the phone companies that will have the advantage if Apple tries to go head to head with them. Being able to play MP3 on my phone is a bonus, not the reason for having one, so I’d be more comfortable with a phone manufacturer I like. But I don’t represent the majority so who am I to guess what people will prefer?

Regardless, iPod will always be the dominant standalone MP3 player. A new device whose main function is to play MP3s will never knock it off its perch. Sure, devices that do much more than play music will likely all but extinguish the sale of MP3 players, but the “iPod killer” will not just play music. So please stop using the term when describing a funky new MP3 player, you’ll look stupid when it goes nowhere.

* MP3 player, for the purposes of this post, means any portable music player that plays some kind of compressed file format (mp3, wma, aac, etc.)

Logic Problems

Some of these are hard… Well, not the easy ones, but if you go to the very difficult section they get hard very quickly.

Cool Gadgets

Haha,

Stumbled across this Top 10 Coolest DIY Gadgets on TechEBlog. Some people have way too much time, but as long as it’s amusing me, how could I complain?!

My personal favourite is the PainStation 2. Closely followed by the lego robot that plays Connect 4. :)

Mosquito ringtone

Graph of rough ages and hearable frequenciesI’ve read about 5 articles in the past couple of days about the “Mosquito” ringtone that has been going around in the US and UK.

Here’s a few links: BBC, Washington Post, CBS News.

Anyway, the story goes like this:

A short time ago, a Welsh security company decided that a good way to stop teenagers congregating in certain areas would be to broadcast a really annoying sound that could only be heard by youngsters and not adults. The idea relies on the general premise that your hearing degrades as you age. The other articles have better descriptions and I’m too lazy to put my own up… There’s an image on this post that gives you the idea anyway.

Anyway, some enterprising young teenager decided to turn the technology against the adults, and recorded the sound to use as a ringtone for his phone. That way, he could use it in class, and the teachers wouldn’t be able to hear it. One of the posts I read suggested that maybe he could have just put the phone on silent, but I’ve never been a fan of occam’s razor (boring), and this solution is much more crafty.

It’s worth looking at the blog post by a guy named Ochen Kaylan – he gives samples of a whole lot of frequencies so you can see when yours cuts out (the last one I can hear is 15,000Hz – I’m going deaf…)

Oh yeah, and this guy has a download of the mp3 if you want it for your ringtone.

Volleyball video

This is a amusing little video of some kid getting ‘packed in a game of volleyball. I’m mainly putting it up to test a video plugin I just installed.

Cool :)

Welcome

Welcome to damianbrady.com!

Obviously there’s not much on here at the moment, but hopefully there will be.

I had an attempt at keeping a blog up to date not that long ago, but for the few of you who actually read a post or two, you’ll realise that I got slack. The main reason is because I was using blogger, and then found WordPress and decided to upgrade. I really didn’t feel like continually updating a site that I was about to destroy…

Anyway, feel free to email me, post comments, and kinda do whatever. The email address for stuff related to this blog is blog@damianbrady.com.
